A Fun Run

Yesterday, Matt and I went for a run with my high school BFF Jenny and her husband, Dan!

IMG_0945Don’t worry, my zipper isn’t broken – it’s a double zipper so you can let air in!

Jenny (who now goes by Jen, but I’ll never call her that!) and I have been best friends since 10th grade, when we were both new in town and met at the bus stop on the first day of school in Falls Church, VA. I invited her over to check out my R.L. Stine books (remember those?!? so good!) after school, and we’ve been besties ever since. :) Fun fact: we were together so much in high school that our friends started called us “Jannie” (Jenny + Annie, which is what a lot of my high school friends call me). Those of you who have been reading the blog will remember that she was also my matron of honor in our wedding last fall! It’s so nice having friends who have known you for ages.

Anyway! Jenny and Dan are in town visiting her family for the holidays. On Monday night, we had a fun get together with a big group of high school friends, and yesterday, the four of us met up for a run!

Jenny is training for her very first full marathon – the Atlanta Marathon in March! I’m so proud of her. They live down in Georgia for Dan’s med school residency, so I was really excited to show them one of my favorite DC running routes.

We all met at our apartment to kick off the run, which ended up being a really good thing – we’re staying nearby with my family right now for the holiday and arrived back to our apartment to find a massive leak in one of the ceiling sprinklers. The carpet in most of the apartment was completely saturated and the water was landing right on my nice antique wood dresser. Awesome. So glad we didn’t wait until Monday to go back to our place, which was our original plan! This is also one of those times when not owning your place rocks – we called the maintenance people for our apartment and then were able to leave shortly after for the run. Glad we aren’t staying there this week – it’s a big mess in there now with the carpets ripped up, all the furniture moved, and a massive fan going. Yikes.

After dealing with that, we headed out for the run! Down the hill, over Key Bridge (pictured above), and into Georgetown.

We turned right and headed over the canal and down towards the waterfront.

There’s a little ice skating rink at the Georgetown waterfront right now! So cute. Must come back!

It was SUCH a gorgeous day for a run! Really cold but beautiful sunny, blue skies.

After the waterfront, we cut left over past the Lincoln Memorial and down along the reflecting pool…

Before turning around at the WWII Memorial.

Hey, Lincoln…

From there, we ran over Memorial Bridge and up to this nice view in Rosslyn.

Then ran up and up, sprinting out the finish. Such a fun run! Jenny couldn’t believe we did 9:15 minute miles average – that’s faster than usual for her. I told her all she needed to go a little faster was good company and good views! A good reminder that you can always run faster than you think. :)

Jenny has a 14 miler for marathon training on the docket this weekend and I told her I’d run it with her – will be a good challenge for me, too! :) She has a 9 month old daughter, by the way – I’m SO proud of her for getting back into fitness and training for a full marathon with the added big challenge of a baby! She looks – but more importantly, feels – amazing. <3

Anyone else get in a great run this holiday week?
