Driving the Papanalahoa Point Shoreline + Maui Blow Hole

Matt and I had a fun accidental adventure today and I just have to share: driving the Papanalahoa Point Shoreline! This area is north of our hotel in Maui – we were driving back to our hotel after picking up our race packets for the 10k (and the half marathon for me as well) and decided to just keep driving north on highway 30 and see what was up there. It turns out it’s gorgeous!

It was like a much less traveled and more scenic (in terms of stunning cliff/ocean views, but lacking waterfalls) Road to Hana – highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area.

At one point we pulled off to a lookout and noticed there was a trail so we decided to start walking. It turns out we ended up stumbling upon the long way to walk to a really cool blow hole attraction! We weren’t really prepared for a hike (no sunscreen or hats, wearing flip flops and normal clothes) but we decided to go with it when we realized the blow hole was nearby – Matt had read about it and said it sounded really cool!

The hike to the blow hole was gorgeous, though quite rocky – I’d recommend real shoes if you plan ahead more than we did. Image may be NSFW.

About 30 minutes later we found the blow hole. Worth the hike – it was so cool! I posted an Instagram video of it in action if you want to check it out – click on my profile picture when on my page to see it. Here’s a photo progression – amazing how powerful the water was!

Matt got a really cool picture from the side where a rainbow appeared – amazing!

After making it back to the car, we continued driving north and the road got narrower and narrower. We were basically driving right by a cliff and things got a little dicey anytime a car needed to come past the other direction, but the views were beyond amazing and we drove through a tiny cute town, too.

It’s crazy how much of Maui is still wild/uninhabited!

Such a fun and unexpected adventure. Never stop exploring and getting off the beaten path, my friends! It’s always worth it. Image may be NSFW.

:)

What’s the best off-the-beaten-path travel adventure you’ve ever had? Getting really lost while running in the Italian countryside was one of my all time favorites!
