A Speedy Run, CrossFit Fun + Local Produce

Good morning, my friends! I had such a good run this morning – one of those runs where you just feel awesome. Don’t you love that? It certainly doesn’t happen every day, so I made sure to appreciate it even more. Image may be NSFW.

Even though getting up is hard, I really love being up and out before most people are. I met up with my friend Sokphal at 6 a.m. in Rosslyn and it felt like we had the city to ourselves.

Since it was still quite dark out, we stuck to lit paths. From Rosslyn, we ran over Key Bridge and down along the Georgetown waterfront. We looped over Memorial Bridge and back, and then ran along the reflecting pool and around the WW II Memorial, looping back. So pretty in the morning light.

The Lincoln Memorial always looks beautiful all lit up in the early morning.

We headed back over Memorial Bridge and finished out near Iwo Jima. We covered quite a lot of distance – 6.7 miles – but it flew by thanks to chatting away with Sokphal. I was pumped about our pace, too – I haven’t seen times like this on a training run in quite awhile, and it was really humid out this morning, too. I think those track workouts are starting to pay off!

Splits:

  • Mile 1: 8:27
  • Mile 2: 8:17
  • Mile 3: 8:09
  • Mile 4: 8:07
  • Mile 5: 8:17
  • Mile 6: 8:20
  • Last 0.7 mile pace: 7:50

Woohoo! I’m back, baby! I think I was partly inspired by Dennis Kimetto, the Kenyan who just set a new world record for the marathon in Berlin over the weekend. His time was 2:02:57, for an average pace of 4:41 minutes/mile. Isn’t that INSANE?!?! If he can do that for a whole marathon, I was thinking this morning, then I can certainly push myself a little harder right now. Right? Image may be NSFW.

On the non-running workout front, I hit up CrossFit last night! I was supposed to play tennis with someone but they had to bail, so since I was already in workout clothes, I figured I’d CrossFit instead. I hit up the 5:30 p.m. class, and after warming up we started with barbell rows – I did about 55 pounds.

As for the workout, we had a 20 minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of the following: 5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 air squats. Whew! I used a band for the pullups.

The workout was especially fun because I met a blog reader there! She has friends that go to my gym and was there to check it out. Great meeting you, Katy! Image may be NSFW.

Hope you’ll come back more often!

As for food, for lunch yesterday I threw together one of my favorites – a huge Mexican quinoa salad. Quinoa + black beans + leftover homemade salsa + green pepper + salad greens + avocado. Simple and tasty!

We got another (complimentary) box from From the Farmer this morning, so I have some new produce to use up!

One of the highlights this week was some beautiful early Fuji apples from Chesley Vegetable farm. These apples are the pioneers of the fuji apple crop we all know and love – they harvest 6 weeks earlier than normal fujis, and because of the earlier harvesting, they don’t store as well. This means you don’t find them in supermarkets – only at farmers’ markets! Orchard to mouth, yes please. Keep an eye out for them at your local markets this weekend!

I love apples with almond butter as a snack, and some of them might get turned into my Baked Apple Cinnamon Oat Bars (<—another old fave recipe that recently got a photo update!). Love that recipe.

Another highlight: From the Farmer is offering fresh local eggs in their boxes now as an add-on. Love!
